PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

EDOF lenses for myopia and presbyopia
In 2017, our extended depth of focus (EDOF) contact lenses for myopia management and presbyopia were licensed for commercialisation, involving collaborations with:
  • SEED Co., Ltd (“SEED”) in Japan to deliver advanced vision correction for ageing people and myopes.
  • European manufacturer, mark’ennovy, who will be producing tailor-made, lathe cut, soft lenses for myopes and presbyopes.
Neuro-ophthalmic device for diagnosis and management of concussion
Intellectual property and test software was licensed to BrainRulers LLC in 2017 to develop a neuro-ophthalmic device for diagnosis and management of concussion.

Spectacle lenses for myopia
We co-developed the MyoVision™ spectacle lens with industry partner Carl Zeiss Vision, released in 2010.
Multifocal contact lenses for correction of presbyopia
Multifocal soft contact lens for correction of presbyopia launched by CIBA VISION in February 2009 as the AIR OPTIX™ AQUA MULTIFOCAL contact lenses.

Soft toric lenses for astigmatism
Soft toric contact lenses for the correction of astigmatism were co-developed with CooperVision, launched in 2002 as the Biomedics Toric lens.

First 30 day continuous wear contact lens
The silicone hydrogel polymer, released by CIBA VISION as the Focus® Night & Day™ contact lens in 1999. This new class of material now accounts for more than 50 % of the soft contact lens market globally.

  • 2015 - The Accommodating Gel is a clear gel-lens system that will replace the eye’s natural lens as an alternative to conventional intraocular lens (IOL) replacement in cataract surgery procedures. The technology is available for co-development or licensing to commercial.
  • 2013 to 2014 - Intraoperative autorefractor technology and ocular coherence tomography technology for eye surgery were licensed to Bioptigen Inc (now Leica Microsystems) in 2014 and 2013 respectively.
  • 2012 - Collaboration with Abbott Medical Optics (AMO) leading to the launch of AMO’s current dual-disinfectant multipurpose disinfecting solution.
  • 1991 to 2015 - Surgical and imaging technology – Accommodating Gel; Intraoperative Autorefractor; Intraoperative Optical Coherence Tomography.
  • 1984 to 1994 - Methods developed for the definition of the oxygen needs of the eye; methods of using and screening extended wear lenses which led to high Dk Silicone Hydrogel lenses (CIBA VISION, Bausch & Lomb).
  • 1983 - The first centre-distance and centre-near soft bifocal combination for treating presbyopia with concentric bifocal contact lenses (CooperVision).
  • 1975 - Extended wear soft lenses, co-designed Permalens and Permaflex extended wear soft contact lenses.
  • 1973 - Determined endothelial response to contact lens wear.
  • 1972 - Comfortable, well performing daily wear hydrogel spherical and toric lens (Zero 6 Hydron).

Cooperative Research Centres

25 years leading Cooperative Research Centres

Brien Holden Vision Institute was the lead participant in a series of successful ‘Cooperative Research Centres’ between 1991 and 2015, supported by the Australian Government, which brought together international industry and research institutions to deliver breakthrough products.

World-leading contact lens products were co-developed though the Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology (CRCERT, 1991-2003) and Vision Cooperative Research Centre (Vision CRC, 2003-2015), generating over $300 million in royalties for CRC partners and around $1.5 billion in cash and in-kind investment.

Other achievements include contact lens and spectacle designs for myopia management, major advances in knowledge of contact lens-related infection and inflammation, new technologies to aid eye surgery, significant growth in the contact lens market, professional education for thousands of practitioners, training of more than 100 postgraduate research students and the establishment of an international NGO building sustainable eye care in developing communities.
